Yucca-Argyle Triangle

Hollywood, CA

Lyric and utopiad.org served as project designers for Deborah Murphy on this 2015 Metro Call for Projects grant application in the Pedestrian Improvements category. Analyzing mobility and wayfinding needs near the Hollywood and Vine Metro hub, the team found an opportunity to reclaim roadway at the Yucca-Argyle triangular intersection in which a right-turn only lane had the potential to be closed and renewed as plaza space when combined with the existing raised concrete median.

Working with the People St kit-of-parts and prototypes for wayfinding and environmental graphic design, the plaza incorporates the “pinwheel” paving pattern, pylon signage, lounge furnishings, shade umbrellas, planters, and cafe tables and chairs. The site’s proximity to the several thousand feet of future mixed-use developments including hotel, condos, student housing and restoration of the Palladium within a ¼ mile makes this a viable hub for civic engagement and programming.

The vibrant plaza links to the proposed streetscape enhancements along Yucca St which include cycle tracks, a chicaned roadway with alternating curb extensions, and reverse diagonal parking. It serves as a visual indicator that many destinations are just a short walk away.
